The GEPC

Eric Zeeven (Chairman)

I hold a bachelor of surveying degree from the University of Otago in New Zealand, where I am a registered professional surveyor (NZIS). Since graduation in 1991, I have worked in the UAE, Romania, New Zealand and Libya before my current position for Canary Wharf Contractors in London where I have worked as senior engineering surveyor since 1999, specialising in high rise construction. I am currently leading a team on the Canary Wharf Crossrail station project. In addition to GEPC, I am a member of ICES Council of Management and the Future Policy Working Group. I served as secretary to ICES South East from 2001 to 2008. Outside work I enjoy travel, reading and spending time with my wife and two young children.

MSc, CGeog(GIS), FCInstCES, MBCS

Originally trained in Cartography, I quickly became involved in engineering, land, and hydrographic surveying on large infrastructure engineering projects in remote locations around the world. This work also included developing software and methodologies to enhance automated mapping, 3-dimentional modelling, and engineering design applications.

Following a Master’s Degree in Construction IT, I have been involved in delivering advanced geospatial and ICT services to engineering, environmental and utility clients in both the public and private sectors.

I am Chair of the joint ICE/ICES Geospatial Engineering Panel at the Institution of Civil Engineers, member of ICES Council of Management and the Future Policy Working Group and was recently nominated Vice President.

Jo Dutta
BSc(Hons) FCInstCES FRICS

After graduating in 1977 from what is now called University of East London I spent my early career trying to get as much varied experience in as many developing countries as Huntings would send me. I have worked in the Middle and Far East, Africa and the North Sea. In the late eighties I became more involved with surveying in the civil engineering discipline working in this country for a small survey company and later for a large worldwide engineering consultancy on what was then the largest civil engineering project in the world. The work varied from deformation monitoring of earth embanked reservoirs to mapping areas half the size of Wales. Over the last few years I have been providing technical survey and mapping advice to large projects including the Olympics, the Forth Replacement Crossing-Scotland and to key clients such as the Environment and Highways Agencies as well as being on the management team of a Geomatics business unit. I am also treasurer for the ICES South East Region and have served as chairman for member interview panels.

TCInstCES

Current GEPC rep for South West & South Wales region.
Six years GIS surveying on multiple asset management contracts under the TFL and Highways Agency frameworks and using GIS for the past 3.5 years on a secondment to Highways Agency Area 2 (the Balfour Beatty Mott MacDonald joint venture in the South West). Previously I enjoyed 5 years land surveying with a small company in greater London (XYZ Land Surveys). Current interests include LiDAR and high definition data capture - for which I have had an article published in CES. My current work involves mapping regional/national maintenance boundaries for the HA and dealing with a variety of spatial standards from field surveys and data sources. Area 2 is the largest of the HA contract areas. Along with the ethos of sharing (some) data, I am involved in getting the GE subgroup for the regional reps, currently hosted on linked in, off the ground.

Nigel Penna

BEng, MSc, PhD, MCInstCES
I am Lecturer in Geomatics at Newcastle University, teaching engineering surveying to Civil Engineering students, land surveying and least squares to Geomatics students, and GPS and least squares on continuing professional development courses for industry.  I undertake research and consultancy on all aspects of precise GNSS geodesy and error modelling, particularly the monitoring of engineering structures such as oil platforms, and the Earth’s movement and deformation due to geophysical processes.  Before joining Newcastle in 2004, I worked for 4 years at Curtin University, Australia, and previously the University of Nottingham, where I was also an undergraduate and postgraduate student.  I have also spent 6 months as a visiting scientist at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California.

In addition to my work with the GEPC, I am a member of the ICES Council of Management and the Finance and General Purposes Committee. In 2006, when I retired from my full time role at Photarc Surveys, the company that I co-founded in 1974, I became the part time secretary general of The Survey Association. I have been involved in photogrammetry and surveying in one capacity or another for over 40 years and still retain a real passion for the subject. In my ever decreasing spare time, I enjoy family, sport, travel and cooking.

I spent ten years as a class 1 Military Engineering Surveyor with the Royal Engineers and travelled to The Falklands, Norway, Canada, Germany and many other exotic places. I left in 1997 and went on to work as a hydrographic surveyor in the North sea, a local land surveyor in Otago New Zealand, a road building and civil engineering consultant in Colorado USA and am now the Survey Manager for Sir Robert Mcalpine where we have just handed over the London 2012 Olympic stadium to the ODA. I am currently involved with a large structural automated monitoring system in London,  the surveying of renewable energy sites throughout the UK and Ireland, various high-rise concrete structures in London, the new national indoor BMX arena in Manchester and many other large scale construction projects around the UK.. I am trying to coordinate the GEPC with a local representative in each region by the use of Social media and LinkedIn, this is so we can have a direct way of providing assistance to the regions and a route of asking questions directly to the panel. When not surveying I spend most of my free time in the mountains skiing, biking and with my young family.
