ICES joins Alliance
ICES has become a key member of the new North West Construction Industry Alliance (NWCIA). The culmination of two years’ development of closer relationships and co-operation within the construction industry in the north west of England, the NWCIA was officially launched at the Civil Engineering
Contractors Association (CECA) annual live debate, awards and dinner on 23 September 2011 in
Liverpool. NWCIA brings ICES together with CECA, the Chartered Institution of Highways and
Transportation, Association for Consultancy and Engineering and the Institution of Civil Engineers.

The ethos behind the alliance is that it does not exist to advertise, lobby or promote on behalf of any
member company or industry sector, but to provide an open and easily accessible conduit to and from the construction sector within the region. By building closer and co-operative links to local enterprise
partnerships — the joint authority/business bodies that promote local economic development — the
alliance aims to help drive growth by investment, skills, employment, efficiency and innovation within the region.

ICES supports training
ICES has voiced its support for ConstructionSkills as the industry’s training board seeks new funding.
As a Construction Industry Council member, the institution has written to the UK Commission for Employment and Skills asking for funding to be provided to develop national occupational standards, apprenticeship frameworks and vocational qualifications.

ICES CEO Bill Pryke said: “We’re happy to support CIC in this initiative to safeguard funding. It is vital to
the future of the industry that the right training is developed by the right people.”

ICE library
Arrangements for ICES members’ use of the library at the Institution of Civil Engineers have been finalised. ICES members can borrow publications for three weeks from the library in person or visit for reference purposes. Library staff are also able to undertake reference searches for members and email them the results. A document supply service is available at a cost of £5 per PDF and 20p per A4 photocopy
(minimum charge of £5).

To access the library electronically, members need to contact the library with their membership number
and full contact details, and request to be added to the library users database.
The library is located at ICE HQ in One Great George Street, Westminster, and can be contacted on
+44 (0)20 7665 2252.

New Members Only area on website
As a new service to our members, we have developed a new Members Only area which can be accessed from the home page. Use this area to access CPD presentations from regional events, published papers including minutes and guidance notes, and reading lists for our accredited universities. Overseas members will also be able to use this area to make subscription payments.

To access the Members Only area visit the ICES homepage: www.cices.org, click the Members Only

button, User Name = your membership number, Password = your family name.

The Members Only area houses our new online CPD record which when submitted is automatically
added to the members database record. To start using this, click ICES online CPD record, New Visitors
and follow the prompts.

If you have any papers, reading lists etc that you think would be of benefit to other ICES members, please email them to sronan@cices.org so that they can be added to the Members Only area.

Regional CPD events
ICES HQ actively encourage the regions to organise CPD events for their members. We now offer a
support service to cover tasks such as booking venues and dealing with associated paperwork, advertising events, taking bookings, producing attendance registers, feedback questionnaires and attendance certificates. Following the event we will supply the region with event feedback analysis, add slides and presentations to the regional web page, and finally we will update members CPD records on our database.

If would like to contribute to your region's events programme, contact your regional Chair or Secretary in
the first instance - you will find their details on the regional web page or in your copy of CES. If you are a regional Chair or Secretary and would like ICES HQ to help you organise an event, please contact the Professional Development Coordinator on 0161 972 3100 or development@cices.org.
